Intent
At St. John’s, our French curriculum is designed to foster a love for language learning and to build pupils’ confidence and competence in communicating in a language other than English. Rooted in our school’s values, the curriculum aims to broaden pupils’ horizons, deepen their understanding of different cultures, and equip them with skills that will support their future learning and global citizenship.
Through engaging and inclusive lessons, we will:
- Develop Language Skills: Provide pupils with opportunities to listen, speak, read, and write in French, building a strong foundation in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.
- Encourage Confidence in Communication: Foster a supportive environment where pupils feel confident to practise and experiment with their language skills, without fear of making mistakes.
- Promote Cultural Awareness: Inspire pupils to appreciate the richness of French culture, traditions, and way of life, fostering respect and curiosity about other cultures.
- Build Memory and Resilience: Use repetition, games, songs, and practical activities to help pupils retain key language structures and develop resilience in language learning.
- Prepare for Future Learning: Lay the groundwork for further language study in secondary school, equipping pupils with transferable skills and a positive attitude towards learning languages.
At St. John’s, we aim to nurture confident, enthusiastic, and open-minded learners who value the opportunities that language learning brings. Our French curriculum helps pupils build linguistic skills, cultural understanding, and an appreciation of the importance of communication in an interconnected world.
