School Mission

To enable all children to achieve their true potential in a caring and inclusive community based on Christian values.

School Values

Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, Truthfulness and Perseverance.

Our Mission, Vision and Values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils as confident, happy citizens.

A St John’s Pupil

By the time our pupils leave our school, we aspire for them to embody the following qualities:

  • A passion for learning, with an insatiable curiosity and eagerness to discover more about the world.

  • A strong moral compass, understanding the principles of justice and fairness, and consistently making ethical choices.

  • Resilience and self-assurance, with the confidence to think independently and make their voices heard.

  • Courageous advocates, standing up for what they believe is right and demonstrating integrity in their actions.

  • Inquisitive thinkers, who ask thoughtful questions and approach the world with a sense of wonder and inquiry.

  • Analytical minds, capable of thinking critically and solving problems with clarity and creativity.

  • Empathy and inclusivity, embracing and respecting the uniqueness and diversity of others.

  • A deep sense of self-awareness, understanding their strengths, values, and potential.

  • Informed decision-makers, who reflect on their choices and take responsibility for their actions.

Our goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for academic success but are also able to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.

Context: The National Society was founded when there was no state system of education in place, and the Society's hugely ambitious vision was to open a church school in every parish.  A major fundraising campaign was launched, encouraging parishes and clergy to apply for grants to build schools and it was largely due to this initiative that Parliament established a universal right to education for all children.  Schools were to offer education based on the teachings of the Church of England, with the belief that moral and spiritual education was as important to children as learning skills or a trade*.  St John’s School was founded in 1837, originally 'in union' with the National Society, and funded by donations. Today the school is operated in partnership with the Local Education Authority.  The school is still legally owned by the Church as Trustees but controlled by the Local Authority which has full financial responsibility for its maintenance. The Church is represented on the Governing Body.

“All children deserve to love their childhood, finding space for play, exploration, imagination and creativity. They should be surrounded by loving relationships, structures and systems which release and enable life in all its fullness.” (Nigel Genders, Foundation for Educational Leadership, The Church of England Education Office)

We live by our values:

At St John's we show RESPECT by:

We treat everyone as we would like to be treated. We work together in tolerance, understanding and respect to create a happy school. We celebrate differences and similarities and embrace the diversity of our community.

At St John's we show RESPONSIBILITY by:

We are responsible for our words, actions and attitude. We can be trusted to do what is right and make good choices. We all have a responsibility to make our world a better place. By working together, as a team, we achieve this.

At St John's we show KINDNESS by:

We try to be kind with the words that we use and our actions. We try and be kind to the school environment and the environment outside by putting things away and not throwing litter.

At St John's we show TRUTHFULNESS by:

We try to be honest in all that we say and do. We know it is important to be truthful and accept responsibility if we have done something wrong.

At St John's we show PERSEVERANCE by:

We work hard to achieve the best we can in everything we do, even when it is difficult. We are not afraid to ask for help when we need it.
